Proliant ML350G4p server fails to start

Server seen working, was shut down and restarted several times, then was shut down, powered off and relocated, powered up about an hour later.

On power up fans run at full speed, LEDs flicker on SCSI controller. Group of 8 LEDs on bottom LH corner of motherboard - near CMOS battery - flicker in encouraging patterns. After about 15 seconds fans slow, LEDs on motherboard go out, and SCSI controller starts to power up the 6 drives. Motherboard only shows AC power OK and PS GOOD LEDs.

Health LEDs on the front all show green.

At this point the screen should show the BIOS starting, preceded by a single beep.

But nothing happens. No BIOS screen, disks do not boot, keyboard LEDs do not show initialization.

Please advise next diagnostic steps ... Thanks

how many power supplies ,if 1 try it in other slot

if2 swap then in to each others slots if it then work you need a power supply backplane

do fans spin ,,,if not buy a power supply,,

if they do remove all drives and pci cards ram too

if it boots add 2 sticks ram only
them add parts one at atime and reboot

til you find the offender,

There is 1 PSU - have tried it in both slots - no success.

Already explained - all fans spin correctly.

Removed PCI card (SCSI Controller). Also disconnected cables to Floppy, IDE CD-ROM, and SCSI tape drive. No success.

Removed all RAM. On power up server beeps 3 times, so it knows there is no RAM. Question, is it CPU that tests the RAM and generates beeps, or something else?

nice can we access the ilo,

what is in the log if we cannot access it let me know
but by default it picks a dhcp ip , ping the dns name it should be on a tag on the server or a sticker on the ilo port in your server and put that in ip your browser
look in the iml log attatch it here , integrated management log

click on date it should sort the events by date, depending on version..

ILO port shows green LED. But DHCP server has not received request for IP, so no IP issued. Router shows ILO port is connected at 100Mbits/sec

DNS name is ILOGB6212DY65 but cannot ping that either - not surprising since router didn't issue an IP.

FYI ethernet port shows amber when connected separately to router. Router then also shows connection at 100Mbits/sec

ok perhaps it was set to static

clear nv ram
clear nv ram so hopefully it defaults to dhcp.


Clearing the system configuration
To clear the system configuration:
1. Power down the server
2. Remove the power cables etc
3. Remove the access panellook at the diagram on it it will show the position of the maintenace switch( it clears Nv ram)
4. Change position 6 of the system maintenance switch to on.
5. Install the access panel
6. and power up the server
7. Wait for the POST message that prompts you to change the switch setting:
Maintenance switch detected in the "On" position.
Power off the server and turn switch to the "Off" position.
8. Repeat steps 1 through 3.
9. Change position 6 of the system maintenance switch to off.
10. Repeat steps 5 through 7.

if ilo does not take a ipaddress
and server is in min config
and router is set okay then i suggest sys board after the above is done

You suggest:

Lights adjacent to maintenance switch flicker as normal. Fans run at full speed. After about 1 minute lights then go out and fans slow.

No POST messages.

So I power off the server and turn switch to the "Off" position.

Power up again: Lights adjacent to maintenance switch flicker as normal. Fans run at full speed. Different: after about 15 seconds lights then go out and fans slow.

Still no POST messages.

Is there any way to determine whether fault is with motherboard or CPU without substituting known good components?

if cpu looks chared on its face change it , if not logical step is replace system board
power looks good fans speed up and down that is controlled by cpu, you have intel cpu,
appears it is still using logic

at this stage i would replace system board,

only way to be 100 % without spare parts , is a test bed for the sys board,,as onboard leds on sys boards are fallible too
