Proliant Redundant power supply operation

Hi all,

We're currently in the process of adding power to our server room. The electrical engineer is asking how the loads are distributed between the two power supplies, in say a Proliant DL380 G4.

Does both PS draw an equal amount of power and in the event of a failure draws all current from the online one? Or is all load going to one and in the event of a failure; switched over to the other?

I've been browsing HP's site for this information without success. (I've seen the power calculator for Proliants, but not what i'm looking for)

Any replies, could you please include a documented link if available?

Re: Proliant Redundant power supply operation

Hi,

The load is balanced on all the power supply units on the server. This is applicable on all proliant servers. That is if there are two PSU's and if one of the PSU goes bad then the second one takes over 100%.

When the server is working with 2 PSU's the load is shared, 50% each.

Please try the following links:

Hi Darren

Multiple power supplies share the load and help in redenduncy. You have to consider Power rating of Single power supply for Electrical load calculation.
