is it required that nic 1 and 2 be connected to a hub to achieve full duplex

No it is not. I have a DL360 running at 100 FULL Duplex with 1 NIC in.

You should be able to set the duplex/line speed on the NIC from the Control Panel in either the Network and Dial-up Connections Properties/Adapter Configuration/Advanced or in the HP\Compaq Network Teaming and Configuration utility\Properties (if the server is installed with SmartStart).

If you are using an inteligent hub/switch this may have defaults which fix the line speed - you may need to telnet onto the hub/switch and setup the port you are connected to.

Hope this helps....
