Questions on DL580 G2 Server- Simple Ones

I looked at 80 pages of messages and found virtually nothing on the DL580 G2, so here goes.

I have a HP DL580 G2 with 4 2.5ghz Xeon cpu's. I installed W2K Advanced Server manually and the performance manager shows 8 cpus. I take it then these are dual core. I have 4 36.4 gig scsi drives which seem to be in a raid array providing a total of 104 gigs or so. It has a 5i array controller with 64 megs of memory apparently. I have 12 gigs of memory on two memory boards (8 in 1 gigs, and 4 in 512megs).

1. What HP software should I download to bring this server up to date?

2. Will this server run x64 Windows server?

3. As Windows 32bit only supports 4 gig of memory, what can I do with all that extra memory? Can I assign 3 gigs to each cpu? That would be nice.

4. Why is there so little here about this server? Is this server high or low end? Do not know much about it.

5. Any ideas on usage limits on this box if I run SQL Server 2000 on it?

Thanks much everyone.

Re: Questions on DL580 G2 Server- Simple Ones

hi Dan

1. What HP software should I download to bring this server up to date?
-> Proliant Support Pack
the version depends on the OS you install in your server

W2000
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3288116&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=316533&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=181#78221

W2003
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3288116&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=316533&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1005#78221

2. Will this server run x64 Windows server?
-> no it won't
http://h71028.www7.hp.com/enterprise/cache/461235-0-0-0-121.html

3. As Windows 32bit only supports 4 gig of memory, what can I do with all that extra memory? Can I assign 3 gigs to each cpu? That would be nice.

-> well it depends the Windows OS you got
check below the memory requirements for windows 2003 based on the version
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsserver/bb430827.aspx

also check the PAE option whih basically enables more than 4 GB if the windwos 2003 supports more than 4 GB

4. Why is there so little here about this server? Is this server high or low end? Do not know much about it.
-> all the info about that server here

5. Any ideas on usage limits on this box if I run SQL Server 2000 on it?

-> sorry no HP information about it as far as I know
maybe someone else has tested this box using SQL 2000

bye
Didn't your momma teach you to say thanks!
