RAID 5 Array randomly rebuilds
hello everybody.
i have a ProLiant DL380 G7 server with two RAID arrays.
about once a week the second array (RAID 5 SATA) goes recovery mode and starts rebuilding the first physical drive.
rebuild takes something like 12 hours, then everything goes back OK.
what the hell is goin' on?
- here is what happens:
# hpacucli ctrl slot=0 show config
[...]
array B (SATA, Unused Space: 0 MB)
logicaldrive 2 (2.7 TB, RAID 5, Recovering, 19% complete)
physicaldrive 1I:1:3 (port 1I:box 1:bay 3, SATA, 1 TB, Rebuilding)
[...]
- and then everything is OK again:
# hpacucli ctrl slot=0 show config
Smart Array P410i in Slot 0 (Embedded) (sn: 50014380095A23E0)
array A (SAS, Unused Space: 0 MB)
logicaldrive 1 (136.7 GB, RAID 1, OK)
physicaldrive 1I:1:1 (port 1I:box 1:bay 1, SAS, 146 GB, OK)
physicaldrive 1I:1:2 (port 1I:box 1:bay 2, SAS, 146 GB, OK)
array B (SATA, Unused Space: 0 MB)
logicaldrive 2 (2.7 TB, RAID 5, OK)
physicaldrive 1I:1:3 (port 1I:box 1:bay 3, SATA, 1 TB, OK)
physicaldrive 1I:1:4 (port 1I:box 1:bay 4, SATA, 1 TB, OK)
physicaldrive 2I:1:5 (port 2I:box 1:bay 5, SATA, 1 TB, OK)
physicaldrive 2I:1:6 (port 2I:box 1:bay 6, SATA, 1 TB, OK)
SEP (Vendor ID PMCSIERA, Model SRC 8x6G) 250 (WWID: 50014380095A23EF)
- server firmware version is as follows (hpasm:
ROM version : P67 05/05/2011
- controller firmware version is as follows:
Smart Array P410i in Slot 0 (Embedded)
Hardware Revision: Rev C

Re: RAID 5 Array randomly rebuilds
Hello,
HP ADUreport might be able to tell you some more details.
Maybe some disk is intermittently having problems. Connection problems etc.
Also HP IML.
There are a few firmwares released since 3.66B, see this link:
There are also updates to the disk drive firmware:
I haven't gone through the release notes of the firmwares so maybe they don't apply to your problem.

Re: RAID 5 Array randomly rebuilds
As Johan said, get and ADU report. I'd also shut down the system (so as to not initiate a rebuild) and re-seat the drives in case there is a bad connection.
