RAID5 fail

Hi there...

We have an HP Proliant 380p server with 5  HDD of type (10K SAS 300 GB). 

The first two are configured as Raid 1,

The remaining three are configured as Raid 5

We got a HD failure indicator, and we are wondering what should be done:

 

To my understanding, we should get a SAS disk with the same specs, and we should only replace the failed disk and our job is done. Is that right?

Is my understanding correct?

Any advice is highly appreaciated.

Yes, you are correct. The failed drive (10K SAS 300 GB) needs to be replaced ASAP.  This will fix the issue.

Before Calling HP for warranty claim, you can grab the information of the HDD under Storage Information thru SMH, System Management Homepage (if the installation is done properply) using https://localhost:2381

Else, you can safely pullout the disk and get the information while the server is up and running.

Once you got the replacement, simply plugin the hdd to its original location.  It will start synching the information and the light will blink green.  Once the sync is complete, the light in the square red will be off.

To verify using SMH, the storage information should be green.

I assumed you are using Generation 8/9 Server. 

Suggestion:

To have better performance (based on the picture),  rearrange you hdd accordingly. 

RAID1, use port 1 and 2.  It will use port bus 1.

RAID 5, use port 5, 6, and 7.  (you need to move accordingly, 3 to 5, 4 to 6 and 5 to 7).  This should be done offline.  It will use port bus2.
