Raid 0 to 5

I have several Proliant DL360 G5 that are running win/2003. The ServerтАЩs were ordered with only two 146 gb drives. They are set up with Raid 0, IтАЩm adding 3 more 146 gb drives. Can you make a Raid 5 and not lose your data.

Re: Raid 0 to 5

Hi there

Yes you can do this through the ACU.

Re: Raid 0 to 5

Hello,

yes, that's possible. If you have a BBWC module attached to the Smart Array Controller you can do this online.

Re: Raid 0 to 5

Thanks for the help. I've install the drives using ACU.

Setup Paralled Scsi Array A
Logical Drive 1 (420029 mb) Raid 5
Logical Drive 2 (280019 mb) Raid 5

Local Drive (C:) total size 410gb Free Space 405gb

Have I missed a step? Should I see over 700gb of drive space?

Re: Raid 0 to 5

Hello,

if you want to use the space at one peace you must delete the second logical drive and expand the first one.

With two logical drives you should see two disks in the disks management.

Based on this you did not convert to RAID5. With a total of 5 146GB drives (2 old , 3 new) you have the original RAID0 LUN with 2 drives (2 x 146 = 280GB) and new RAID0 LUN with 3 drives (3 x 146 = 420GB)

The numbers do not add up here. What exactly are you saying?

> Have I missed a step? Should I see over 700gb of drive space?

You have. With 5 drives, yes you have 700GB of raw space but when you set up a RAID5 group, you have 4 drives for data and one drive for parity. So you would end up with 560GB (4 x 146) of usable space.
What you needed to do is the following.
1. Add the 3 drives to the old 2-drive raid0 group.
2. Convert from raid0 to raid5
3. expand the original LUN to the remaining raid space
4. Expand the OS partition to use the new space

Re: Raid 0 to 5

Hi guimp,

Listen to TTr,
This guy has really made some valid points.

It seems RAID 5 is not created yet.

Check the more information for array and logical drive that will clarify the situation.
Also confirm if the option is coming to create RAID 5.

Feel free to post here if any further clarification is required.
Also Share the ACU Snapshot with us if possible

SAS Array A:
Logical Drive 1: 139979mb Raid 0

Express config or configuration Wizard do not show upgrade to Raid 5 or enlarge disk space.
