Raid 5 disk failure

With Unix background I need to maintain
2 NT servers (they say if you can maintain unix systems you can do nt-servers , so i will try!):

-proliant 1850 with Smart 2DH array controller with 3 9.1gb disks in Raid 5 mode, no hotspare.
-proliant ML370 with Smart 5302 array controller 3 18Gb disks in Raid 5 mode, no hotspare.

I like to be prepared if a disk goes defective what to do.
Is there documentation how to handle if one disk goes faulty ?
From which application do you get the info what is wrong beside that the fault lamp is on of the disk, event viewer, or other program ?
Any info so that I will be prepared if a disk
goes down is welcome for both system.
thanks in advance

Re: Raid 5 disk failure

With NT it will be easier for you
Here is a list of applications that you can use to monitor problems
ACU â Array configuration Utility
IML â Integrated Management Log Viewer
ADU â array diagnostic Utility
IM â Insight Manager
System Management Home Page
POST Messages
LCD if Present at Front
And Actual Led at the Drive
All Utilities can be found under downloads and can be preinstalled

Re: Raid 5 disk failure

P.S. and if it failed than just replace. Pull out only when completely failed and pop-in replacement.
Keep your system up to date with SCSI drivers and Firmware(s)

Re: Raid 5 disk failure

Thanks for answer, but you say :
Pull out only when completely failed and pop-in replacement.
What is completely failed ?
What happens after replace, do I need to do something ?
Thanks

Re: Raid 5 disk failure

see attachmnet for more info

Re: Raid 5 disk failure

Thanks for your info, so the smart controller takes over to rebuild, nice.
What software application do you suggest to use of your list, which is the best to use according your experience ?

Re: Raid 5 disk failure

U can have Installed Step 1 and step 2. Step 3 take a look for Futures that IM offer

1. ACU - Array configuration Utility and IML - Integrated Management Log Viewer
Installed by default if Proliant Support software Pack used
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/index.html

2. More detailed info from ADU can be collected for some SCSI errors
http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/21867.html

3. IM and System Management Home Page pick error from IML and gave you chance monitor Server remotely
