Raid Advice Seeked

I have a bunch of new drives to add to my system. Since the Smart Array 6400 has a 2TB logical volume limit (right?), any recommendations on how to set up the new drives?

Is it better practice to add more 2TB logical drives to my exisiting array, or create new arrays for them? Any reasons for or against each method? Thanks!

Re: Raid Advice Seeked

Currently, We have 2 arrays, with 1 logical drive each. These arrays are made of all 299.9GB disks.

--Parallel SCSI Array A with Spare
------Logical Drive 1 (2,002,684 MB raid 5)
--Parallel SCSI Array B
------Logical Drive 2 (858,293 MB raid 5)

I have added fourteen 299.9GB drives to the server. This data will be additional space to share data with logical drive 1. Do i add more drives to array A, or create Array's C, D, etc and put the drives there?

If we make them raid6, i lose 2 drives' worth of usable space per logical drive, right?

I believe i can share Hot Spare drives among multiple arrays, right?

Re: Raid Advice Seeked

according with SA 6400 quickspecs
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11587_na/11587_na.html

-Logical Drives Up to 32 logical drives
-Up to 2 TB per Logical Drive

Drives Supported
-2 channel model: up to 28 drives
-4 channel model: up to 56 drives

Maximum Capacity
-2 channel model: 8.40TB (28 drives x 300GB)
-4 channel model: 16.80TB (56 drives x 300GB)

it means that your C: D: E: ... logical drive is up to 2TB
but using until 28 HDD you can a total capacity of 8TB

using RAID 6 you can only have 2 HDD failed in the other hand RAID 5 just lets 1 HDD
RAID is more secure it's safest but the slowest

Re: Raid Advice Seeked

Right....but should I add logical drives to array 1, or create a new array?

Re: Raid Advice Seeked

for better performances (in most cases), add the HDDs to the existing array...

Re: Raid Advice Seeked

How many points should I assign to replies?
Every response to your question is eligible to earn between 1-10 points. No need to worry about running out of points - when a truly awesome reply rolls in that deserves a 10, you will be able to assign it a 10! However, be careful to assign points based on the value that a reply truly provides. Use the following scale as a guideline:

o N/A: The answer was simply a point of clarification to my original question

o 1-3: The answer didn't really help answer my question, but thanks for your assistance!

o 4- 7: The answer helped with a portion of my question, but I still need some additional help!

o 8-10: The answer has solved my problem completely! Now I'm a happy camper!

Although assigning points is not mandatory, it is a key component of a strong, interactive community, and it is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED. Others have taken time to help you, so please take a moment to give them credit for their assistance!
