Re: Reduce fan(s) speed of Proliant1600 to make it more silent

Hello,

Is anyone aware of any particular BIOS setting or trick to reduce the fan(s) speed ?
They seem to blow max. rpm 24/7 and it's not the most silent machine around ;)

I think it is the ML370 *(don't shoot me if I'm wrong here) has a small software package for Linux that controls the fan(s)-speed to make it more "environmentally" "noise-wise" friendly ;)

Just a question.... I'm already happy that I finally got the 2nd proc. to work ! 8-)

Yes, you can install the ProLiant Support Pack for Linux. What distro of Linux are you using?

There is also a way to do this, sort of, but I will say DO NOT do it unless you have this system in a Rack Mounted position. You can set SW1 S3 to ON to enable Rack Mount settings. This also will effect the fans but only after the Health Drivers are loaded.

John, I use Gentoo Linux *(Kernelversion 2.6.7)
http://www.gentoo.org/

It's a tower configuration so I wouldn't set the switch to "rack" as you advised.

Ahhh... Gentoo. I am not as familiar with Gentoo as I would like to be. Good'ole HP does not develop to Gentoo so we will need to find something that will port.

I am not sure which version of either the Red Hat or SUSE would port better and from what version.

If you know what you version of Gentoo is more like a version of either of those, you can try the RPM...

You need the HPASM driver
(it will turn on SNMP, watch out)
