Running DL380 G3 on its side, vertically

Normally the 2U server lays flat when installed in a rack, however, I want to use it standing on its side, edgewise or vertically if you will.

While this will result in transverse HD platter loads on the spindle bearing instead of thrust loading, this appears to be OK because HD's are mounted vertically/sideways in packaged clusters.

Cooling fan shaft axes are front to back so that bearing loads will stand transverse with server either horizontal of vertical.

Thanks in advance,

No, shouldn't be a problem.

My only consern would be if you put the HDD's upside down.

By the way. some ML models and the C3000 bblade enclosure, you can have as tower or rack models. If it's tower, it's on the side. If it's RACK, they are laying down.

What a great thing to bring up - not running HDD's upside down!

It never occurred to me, but, I would definitely have some big reservations about doing that.

Very interesting about the "rack" and the "tower."
