SAS Expander card with a breakout cable?

Hi,

 

I have an old ML350 G6 and right now I have 6 SATA drives connected to the motherboard. This is really slow and I was thinking of buying a SAS expander card from eBay.

My question is if I can buy a SFF-8087 breakout cable and use that instead of connecting it to a backplane?
