SATA Raid and two servers

Hello.

I have two ML310G5 servers identically. The RAID are configured using the internal raid SATA Controller.

If one of the motherboard crashed, Can i change the disk to the other server and it will work fine?

Thanks a lot.
Best regards.

Re: SATA Raid and two servers

Yes, this is called "drive roaming". Just make sure to transfer *all" the disks to the other server.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: SATA Raid and two servers

I assume it is still a smartarray controller?

Hope this helps!

Re: SATA Raid and two servers

No, as I described in the first post is an internal card (or embedded). Is the SATA controller who brings the motherboard.

I´t not a smart array or similar.

Re: SATA Raid and two servers

HI there,

Onboard Sata Raid is not a h/w raid. Raid option is enabled or disabled from system bios. however, Raid information is stored in hard drives.

So, It is possible to move the hard drives to other identical server.

Procedure :
1. Shutdown the server
2. unplug the hard drives from the primary server (also mark the harddrive no.)
3. go to other server and enable the raid functionality from the system bios.
4. shutdown the server and plug the hard drives.
5. turn on the server and see whether it boots to OS.
6. for any procedural info refer to server user and maintenance guide.

few pracautions that you must take.

1. make sure both the servers are identical.
2. system bios for both the servers are identical.
3. you have a valid backup.
4. Raid functionality in other indentical server is enabled.

thanks
Aftab
