SCSI Hard drive addition "ris copy" errors

I picked up an old proliant 1600, got it up and running with smartstart 5.5 and installed a fresh copy of Windows server 2003. My machine consists of dual P3 600 cpu's, Smart array 221 controller and two 9.1GB wide ultra2 SCSI drives. My next step was to add a 3rd drive so I can set up a RAID 5. I finally found a drive, plugged it in and powered up. Just when I was about to say that was easy I see a red light!! Uh oh. My Comnpaq ACU does not detect the drive. The ADU v 1.90 detects the drive and gives me the following error: "Error occurred reading RIS copy from SCSI Port 1 drive ID 2" Through all the reading I have done it seems that the drive is bad but I thought I would post before I chuck this and throw my money away. Any ideas or suggestions?

Re: SCSI Hard drive addition "ris copy" errors

Let's see if you get another uh oh

Firstly it's not clear where RIS table mismatch on the Existing or newly added
Assumption - newly added

Pull suspected Drive out
Verify if you have all latest Updates for Array controller and Firmware for all existing Hard Drives
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/index.html for Drivers
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/17149.html for HDD
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/14694.html for Array Controller
Create only diskette # that needed

If you don't have additional Server
Pull good drives OUT and Install suspected in - run erase Utility or SS Cd 5.5
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/17918.html
Update firmware for it after
if it goes trough, say uh if fails say oh

For server if system Partition installed, after erase you loose NVRAM
Uses for F10 access restore when existing Drives installed back
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/13227.html

Install new Drive and try one more time

Re: SCSI Hard drive addition "ris copy" errors

Thanks, You give me some hope but more confusion. One of the original HDD and the new (seemingly defective) one are both the same model (BD009122BA) and use the same ROMPaq. The other original drive is model (BD00911934) which uses an older ROMPaq but are in the same category on the Compaq hotplug compatibility table. I am not familiar with flashing with this utility and don't feel like blindly trying it out if I don't have to. It took me a while to get Server 2003 on there and patched up nicely. My question now is do I try to flash with the older ROMPaq or do I flash the different hard drive seperately????
Also what about the array controller? It has the latest firmware and drivers. Will I have to roll back to something older?

Re: SCSI Hard drive addition "ris copy" errors

Or is this just a matter of the original 2 disks being mirrored and when a third drive from another environment is added the array controller generates an error. I would like to make sure this is the case before wiping out everything and starting over.

Re: SCSI Hard drive addition "ris copy" errors

RIS Copy - should not happened if Configuration and Settings done at one system, sometimes it will occur when Drives moved around without wiping prior Install. Small portion of Information created by ACU or Array Controller, in some cases old configuration can't be read correctly by next controller, or two drives gave different info to Array Controller, or simply corruption, when improperly used Hardware; and last that would actual Hardware Problem.
Nothing Wrong to Try Updates for Driver, Firmware for Array Controller, ACU, firmware for Hard drives. You can try those steps as first troubleshooting. It much easier to: update; than reinstall. You can leave all three HDD in the system and boot from diskettes for HDD Firmware. If some Updates had done already to the latest, leave them, no downgrade needed. If Update won't help, try to wipe at least third drive and reinstall back. If RIS Copy mismatch on the existing Drive, it's up to you to leave like that or do complete reinstall, however Update still needed if they not that in that case.
