SCSIport to Storport

Hi all,

Just getting into working with SANs and whatnot, and have found that we're using SCSIport drivers instead of storport on our win2k3 boxes which access a SAN over FiberChannel. The HBAs are qlogic 2312 I believe (QLogic Based BladeSystem p-Class Fibre Channel Mezzanine HBA)

Anyone moved from one type of driver to the other before? Is it just a case of updating the drivers, or is there much more involved?

Cheers,
Steve

Re: SCSIport to Storport

Hello Steve,

Applying PSP 7.9 from
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/27534.html

will take care of it;

It includes STORPORT Drivers for Qlogic.

Regards,
James.

Re: SCSIport to Storport

Hi,

if you're switching to STORport, don't forget to apply the latest Hotfix from Microsoft for storport.sys

Re: SCSIport to Storport

Hi Steve,

Be careful. I once applied a PSP (Proliant Support Pack) which changed the driver from SCSIport to Storport. After a reboot, I'd lost the connection to the SAN.

I never did work out exactly why, but reverting back to the SCSIport drivers fixed things. This was some time ago now, so unfortunately I don't remember the version numbers involved...

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Rob

Re: SCSIport to Storport

Hi all,

I'd rather just install the driver and not a whole support pack if possible incase anything else gets updated that I don't want.

In theory then it's just a replacement of the driver?

Steve

Re: SCSIport to Storport

Hi,

yes, it's basically just a driver update. I've done that on several servers, and had no problems (although I do not use HP's driver kits as we don't have HP Storage)

Re: SCSIport to Storport

Hello Steve,

The chances of Loosing Connection are "VERY" Rare, but not ruled out.

It has been tried out many times without issues.

Regards,
James.

{PS: Since the Correct STORPORT drivers is missing, its Obvious that the PSP 7.9 is not installed for your win2k3 server, Hence, the reason, I recommended installing the Whole Pack}

Re: SCSIport to Storport

And as the MS-KB article says, you should also update your Smart Array controller driver before applying the hotfix

Re: SCSIport to Storport

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies - I'll propose we go ahead with the driver changes then.

Re: SCSIport to Storport

Can I just check the order of install here then please?

1) I'm on w2k3 and going to SP1 first.
2) Update Smart Array Driver
3) Install MS patch
4) Install Storport Driver

Cheers,
Steve
