A disk with no moving parts ("solid state"): in other words, a storage device that uses Flash EEPROM chips to store the data, but is otherwise designed to behave like a regular disk. Usually it even uses the same interfaces (SATA or SAS) as regular disks.
One of the main advantages of a SSD is that its seek time is effectively _zero_. Because of this, defragmenting a SSD is pointless.
In a system where disk performance is the limiting factor of overall system performance, using SSDs in place of regular disks can really speed up the system.
