Scary disk problem

We have an ML370 G5 server running Windows Server 2008 R2 with multiple P400 Smart Array controllers hosting several large volumes (RAID-5).  I periodically find that shadow copies fail (this happens on multiple volumes on different controllers) and seems to occur after periods of high IO (particularly disk writes - nightly backups, etc).  Runnning chkdsk on an affected volume yields an error: "Type is RAW - CHKDSK can only be run on volumes formatted as NTFS", or something like that, but  volumes still show as NTFS in disk manager.  Backup exec also has problems reading the volumes when the condition exists (probably because BE is using shadow copy for open file backup).  However, I can still read/write the disk from the server/network and rebooting causes everything to appear to be back to normal with the volumes again being seen as NTFS.  Has anyone else had similar issues?  Does this sound like a Windows bug or a firmware/driver issue?
