Server Shuting down!!!!

I have the following server from Compaq:

Compaq Proliant ML370 PIII 933

A couple of days ago, after rebooting the server, due to software upgrades. The server a couple of hours later shut down automatically and powered off. I had powered back on the server and a couple of minutes later the server had shut down completely again several times.

I had reviewed the event log (Running windows 2000 server). And it had shown the following in the event log as follows:

The Compaq system management driver has detected that the power supply (power supply 1) has failed.

The Compaq system management driver has detected that the power sub-system is no longer redundant.

Unable to connect a DHCP server. The automatic private IP Address 169.254.106.129 will be assigned to dial in clients. Clients may be unable to access resources on the network.

The C: disk is at or near capacity. You may need to delete some files.

The Compaq system information Agent: Compaq health: the fault tolerant power supply subsystem is in a failed state. Restore power or replace the failed power supply. Bay 1.

My question is what could cause the server to shut down automatically several times. I am not able to find the root cause of this problem.

Thank You

Re: Server Shuting down!!!!

Tony:

Have you checked the Power Supply(s) to determine they are not failing? If so, make sure you have the latest health and management drivers loaded on the server: http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/18416.html

Here is a link to the ML370 G1 drivers page should you need it: http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/locate/20_1119.html
Enjoy!

Re: Server Shuting down!!!!

John ,

Thanks for your help, I recently just inherited this server issue. This is the first time that I have worked with compaq servers.

By anychance do you know if this server has two seperate power supplies?

If so and one power supply ocassionaly fails will this cause an automatic shut down of the server?

This problem started after rebooting the server, after a software upgrade.

Thanks
Tony

Tony:

Coming here to the ITRC was your best move! You can get a great majority of your questions answered here.

The ML370 Generation 1 "can" have two power supplies. You should look on the back of the server where the power plugs in. You can see or hear if the fans are running and there the LED's on the front and back are lit and "green".

Here are some links to info on the server, to get familiar with:

Re: Server Shuting down!!!!

Hi Tony,

Welcome to ITRC:)

I believe you have redundant power supplies, however failure of one of them does not mean that the server would shut down. It just means as the error message indicated the power subsystem is not redundant. However, if there is a problem with the flow and quality of power (i.e. inconsistent, fluctuations or dirty power) from your wall outlet) then this might explain the cause.Have you got a UPS attached to the server? One of the functionality most of the UPS offers is conditioning of power before it is supplied to the server.

Could you also look for any errors in IML (Integrated Management Log) for your server. You could access it via Windows IML viewer or by looking at survey.txt in c:\compaq area.

Hope this helps and don't forget to assign points:)

Re: Server Shuting down!!!!

I have several dual power supply Compaq/HP servers. We have had failures on a few. The servers seem shut down when one of the power supplies fail. What we did was remove the failed power supply from the server and then ran the server from the other power supply until the replacement arrived. I would try to remove the bad power supply and run the server. If it runs as expected then replace the failed power supply with a new one.

Re: Server Shuting down!!!!

on another note. You may need to purge some files on the C: drive. unless your event log is misreporting the drive full error.
