Servers hanging on restart, but ok on cold boot

I have a number of servers which are hanging on the black screen with cursor in top right hand corner after a restart, but boot up fine with a manual boot.

They are all ML370 G1's or DL380 G1's. They are mainly running Windows 2000 SP4, with the latest patches.

I have compared one of the servers which is running system bios P17 with another server with same OS & bios, patches etc but that one restarts fine?

Any ideas?

try updating the PSP to 7.9

well there is no Proliant Support Pack(PSP) 7.90 for W2000 for those servers G1 only 7.60A

so do you have that one 7.60?

also I recommend you install the Firmware CD 7.5

first Install the Firmware CD after that PSP

neither for W2003 the only one supported for ml370 and dl380 G1 is PSP 7.60A

Hi,

I have taken over investigating this from Jennie.

I have completed the fore mentioned steps and the symptons persist.

They also occur on a shutdown not just a restart so i suspect the issue is with the operating system, driver or application not letting go of a resource.
All drivers are upto date on the latest versions from HP, and the same version as on other servers on which this issue does not occur.

Other common applications are Backup Exec agent and Symantic Antivirus, but again these are the same version and configuration as on other servers where this issue is not occuring.

Any other clues/routes of investigation i could take?

This is becoming a significant problem now as the dirty shutdowns are causing filesystem corruption in some cases. Any help or suggestions appreciated!

Hi,
Make sure that all the microsoft hot fixes are uptodate. There is an issue with the microsoft storport drivers used by windows that causes similar issue.

Sorry i should have mentioned this occurs on systems at various patch levels, including fully patched as of Patch Tuesday August 2007!

The servers do not reboot normally from safe mode.
and vsp.sys is installed - version 1.9.20.0
