Silly Question

Morning All,

Is it safe to pull a drive in a predictive failed state? I was told once its always best to power the server down first unless its failed. This question also refers to Blades Servers as well. The Server in question today is 385 G5.

Thanks

Re: Silly Question

If the drive belongs to a redundant array (RAID 1+0, 5 or 6) there's no problem. I've done it many times with no issues.

Pull the drive, wait 20 seconds (more o less), and push the replacement drive. In a few seconds the Smart Array should begin to rebuild the array.

But remember, always take a previous backup if possible.

If the drive does not belong to a redundant array, you're in serious trouble.
