I know it works in slots 2 & 7, and that it DOESN'T work in Slot 6 (The 5500 just lets out a few 'groaning' beeps and doesn't start to boot - The IMD doesn't change from the Power-on display).
Does anyone know ALL the slots that are valid for this device?
Alternatively, does anyone know WHY the ProLiant 5500 WON'T boot with it in Slot
Regards, Wesley.

It should work in any slot. Did you try running system erase?

Re: Smart Array 3200 - Valid slots in ProLiant 5500?
I had it in SLot 7, working fine. I moved it to Slot 6, and it didn't work. I moved it to Slot 2 and it worked fine again.
No, I didn't try the System Erase Utility, because I just concluded that Slot 6 wouldn't work.
For curiosity sake, I WILL run the Erase and let you know if it makes any difference.
Regards, Wesley.
