Smart Array 5i 300GB Hard Drive Support?

Hey Guys,

Could someone confirm if the Smart Array 5i (installed in a Proliant ML370 G2 running Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server) supports 300GB SCSI drives. I understand that the maximum data transfer rate would be down to Ultra 3.

The controller specification page on the HP site seems fairly old and indicates that the largest capacity drive that SA 5i can support is 72GB. I find it hard to believe.

Could someone please confirm.

Thanks,
Saket.

Re: Smart Array 5i 300GB Hard Drive Support?

Thats what I said - a HP Pre-Sales person tells me it does support 300GB drives - which conflicts with the info available on hp site.

Could anyone else shed some light to clear up the situation please.

Thanks,
Saket.

Re: Smart Array 5i 300GB Hard Drive Support?

The information provided is from the quickspecs. The quickspecs are typically not updated after the server is retired from manufacturing.

If any machine uses a 5i and the 300 GB drive is supported, then the 300 GB drives are supported on you're 5i. I would look at the quickspecs for the DL580 G2, which has a 5i also, but the quickspecs were written after the release of the 300 GB drive:
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11372_na/11372_na.html#Options

You can also look at the 5i quickspecs, but these haven't been updated since the release of the 146.8 GB drive:

The truth is out there, but I forgot the URL..

Re: Smart Array 5i 300GB Hard Drive Support?

Yes, the 300GB and soon available 400GB drives will be supported with out trouble. And there will be no sacrafice of transfer speeds. Actually the new 300GB drive have the faster transfers availableand are Ultra 320

Re: Smart Array 5i 300GB Hard Drive Support?

e4 - there will be full sacrifice of end-to-end disk throughput...the controller itself does not support Ultra320.

Re: Smart Array 5i 300GB Hard Drive Support?

To increase your moral support, 300GB drives run fine on my DL360g3.

Re: Smart Array 5i 300GB Hard Drive Support?

We use 300 Gb disks with 5300 SmartArray controller (SmartArray 5i is similar :-) )
without any problems.
