Smart Array 6402 Install

Correct me if I am wrong but when installing a Smart Array 6402 controller (in this case into a DL 380 G4 server), there is supposed to be a cable that coonects the 6402 to the backplane of the 6 hot-plug drives? Simply slotting the controller into a PCI slot is not enough, or am I missing something. The server did not come with this option cable and before I go back to the suppliers I just want to make sure I am not being an idiot. Thanks.

Re: Smart Array 6402 Install

Hi Gary,

I think you are right. I believe you should have a SCSI cable connecting the controller card to the backplane of the hotswaps.
If you haven't already, check out

http://docs.hp.com/en/J6369-90011/index.html, or perhaps more specifically:
http://docs.hp.com/en/J6369-90011/ch04s07.html#chdbjjgg

Hope this helps!

Re: Smart Array 6402 Install

Great, thanks. Any idea what if any this cable is refered to as. I dont think I can just ask for a plain SCSI cable as it needs to A) reach and B) be flexible to squeeze between the controller and the server lid.

Re: Smart Array 6402 Install

I'm guessing an internal 68-pin wide SCSI is what you are looking for.
Go to the bottom of http://docs.hp.com/en/A9890-96012/ch02s02.html#d0e1030
and see if the parts listed under Supported Internal SCSI Cables sound right. You might be able to just ask for a "long" 68-pin internal scsi cable for your 6402.

Re: Smart Array 6402 Install

Thanks again bryan, good links.
I managed to get some more info too so send to my supplier so he can get the right cable. attached is an extract from the DL380 guide. It mentions the cable on page one and has a picture on page 4.

Re: Smart Array 6402 Install

Gary

When fitting an array controller you should unplug the existing SCSI cable (that runs between the system board and the drive cage)from the system board and reroute it to a port on the array controller. You use the same cable and it's as simple as that.

It only gets more complicated when you have duplex cages or external storage.

Re: Smart Array 6402 Install

That does sound like a good easy solution except the existing cable will never reach all the way to the RAID controller in the PCI cage.
If you have a look at the picture on page four of the attachment to my previous post you will see the two different type/length cables.
Thanks anyway.
