Smart Array 641 to 6400 Upgrade

Can you replace a Smart Array 641 controller with a 6400 without any issues? Or will I have to reinstall the OS? (Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition).

Re: Smart Array 641 to 6400 Upgrade

Hi,

what i think it will work.
Reason driver set is same
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/storage/us/download/23379.html

where as there is no tested migration path for above controler.
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=c00180566

what i suggest is make a ghost image or backup and go ahead. It will work.

Re: Smart Array 641 to 6400 Upgrade

I replaced the 641 with a 6402. The server gets to a certain point, blue screens and reboots. The registry key and driver appear to be the same. Has anyone else tried this? (I put the old controller back in for the mean time).

Thanks.

Hi,

Can you check the soln proposed here about using the registry key containing the CLSID for controller.

Re: Smart Array 641 to 6400 Upgrade

1. Install the 6400 controller in an available slot while still using the 641 to boot the system.
2. Let Windows discover the new controller and install the drivers.
3. Power off the server and remove the 641. Attach the scsi drive cage cable to the 6400 controller.
4. Boot the system. Once you log in, the OS will ask you to reboot one more time to finalize the removal of the 641 controller.

You are done!
