SmartArray 642 strange behavior
I have been looking to the ADU report, however I do not see any errors with any of the disks.
Does anyone have an idea what happening with the system?
Thank you

Re: SmartArray 642 strange behavior
How did you find the server is stpped?
What was the error when you have seen the server?
was there any power problem?
Which OS do you have ?
Is there any crashdump?

Re: SmartArray 642 strange behavior
1) on how it is found stopped:
Client caaled me in the morning that nobody sees this server on the network. When I arrived, it was running electrically, but nothing on the monitor, and the warning leds of the three disks were red indicating a disk failure.
2) It runs Win server 2003 SP2, and works as a file server and AD server.
3) It seems that the machine dropped dead and tried to restart, but the RAID Controller stopped from doing so. The only notification I got after the system came up that the last shutdown was unexpected, and no kernel dump was produced, so Windows only noticed it afterwards.
4) Among the three drives which indicated failure, #0 has been changed only about 3 months ago, for a similar sudden halt of the system. At that time the ADU report indicated that maybe that disk will fail. After I changed it, and the array has benn rebuilt, it worked without errors.
The thing I find most embarrassing is that it seems that everything works just fine, it still drops itself for no reason.
P.S: all that I have to look at is the ADU report because not even Event Log entries show a clue to any failure
with best regards:

Re: SmartArray 642 strange behavior
as for power problems:
the thing is in an office house and the maintenance staff says that there were no electrical problems during the night. They have a monitoring system that alerts on under/overvoltages and outages.

Re: SmartArray 642 strange behavior
As there is no logs and the drive was replaced earlier, I guess it may be a problem with
1. Bay
2. Cable
3. Bay terminator ( I dont know if any)
4. Atlast the hero - card
It is always better to take assistance from HP!
Still the basic things I will check is the availability of latest firmware and proper hardware connection and power related things.
This is a basic suggetion as per my experience.

Re: SmartArray 642 strange behavior
Thank you for your reply.
The controller had finished the parity repair. I'll start a new backup today, and when it finishes, i'll stop the server, take it apart, an look up that all connections are firm, no dirt in the server housing, etc.
After that, if the systemstarts without error, i'll update all hp firmware in the system, and look what happens next. I think the firmware update is neccessary, because few months ago another server did something quite similar, and it turned out it was for a faulty battery pack in the raid controller, but it did not show in until we upgraded the firmware.
Your response was very helful.
Thank you

Re: SmartArray 642 strange behavior
Please do remember to use an ESD bad while you handle the server hardware.Else the static charges may create some other damages to the chips.
