SmartArray P212 and HP MicroServer

Hello everybody,

I own a HP MicroServer and I want to use it with the free version of VMware vSphere ESXi. I know that the onboard RAID Controller can't be used with ESXi, so I need to add an RAID controller. I found some postings and blogs entries about the Adaptec 2405. The MicroServer has a SFF-8087 connector onboard which is coming from the backplane. The SmartArray P212 and die Adaptec also have a SFF-8087. But the cabe is really short and the SmartArray has the connect behind the bracked, not at the end of the controller card.

Can anybody confirm that a SmartArray P212 can be used in a HP MicroServer?

Regards,
Patrick

You can physically fit a SA P212 in a HP MicroServer, but this configuration is not tested nor supported by HP.

Hello Zygmunt,

I know that it's not supported, but it's only a personal testserver.

Does the cabling fit or is the cable from backplane to the controller to short?

Patrick

Hi Patrick,
if you re-reoute the cable inside the server making it pass behind the disk cage, the cable can easily reach the port on the controller.
to achieve this you have to cut some three zip ties and be careful when you put the board inside the server that the cable doesn't block the pci boards in the back.

here are some pics of the route of the cable
