SmartStart and Service Pack for Proliant

Now that the Service Pack for Proliant (SPP) has replaced Insight Foundation (PSPs, Smart Update Firmware DVD, and other systems software) and SmartStart has been baselined: How will diagnostics and configuration tools (Insight Diagnostics, Array Configuration Utility, and Array Diagnostic Utility) be packaged+delivered?

Re: SmartStart and Service Pack for Proliant

All the tools are packed in SPP as before ( it is a mix of firmwares+drivers+HP Diagnotics Softwares )

Hp will still provide options of downloading firmwares/sw and drivers separately  and will not be removed Hp.com atleast as of yet because not all of them are still aware of SPP and are gradually moving from FW DVD and PSP.

Hope this helps

Where are the Insight Diagnostics, Array Configuration Utility, and Array Diagnostic Utility programs? I don't see them in the SPP. AFAICT, there's only the Smart Update Manager on version 2012.01.00 of the SPP.

Re: SmartStart and Service Pack for Proliant

Well SUM installs them together ( drivers+firmware and softwares ) . if you would like to check the contents like what exactly the SPP installs and their respective file names

Extract the Iso you would find contents.html

HP Insight Diagnostics Online Edition for Windows x64 Editions 8.7.3.4153 cp016071.exe

HP ProLiant Array Configuration Utility for Windows 8.70.9.0 cp013626.exe

Array diagnostics utility is not in their because diagnostics utlility is part of ACU itself now. Also I have created( PFA ) a PDF for your referrence with the contents of the SPP.

Why were the diagnostic+testing tools removed from the SPP DVD? This seems counterintuitive. e.g., Testing an array or expanding an array using tools installed on that array certainly seems unreliable to me.

Re: SmartStart and Service Pack for Proliant

What other diagnostic+testing tools are you referring to that are removed from SPP ?

I see that

HP Insight Diagnostics Online Edition for Windows x64 Editions 8.7.3.4153 cp016071.exe

HP ProLiant Array Configuration Utility for Windows 8.70.9.0 cp013626.exe

HP System Management Homepage for Windows x86 6.3.1.24 (B) cp016433.exe

HP ProLiant Integrated Management Log Viewer for Windows 5.25.0.0 cp013783.exe are all included in the SPP DVD

First: I'm using Linux - not Windows.

Second: I see that the installables are on the Red Hat-specific ISO for the DL/ML/BL platforms but I'm asking about the bootable ISO - not the non-bootable subsets.

Third: What I mean to ask, specifically, is "Why have the HP Insight Diagnostic executables been removed from the bootable ISO?"

Re: SmartStart and Service Pack for Proliant

I didn't realize the offline versions of ACU and diags had been removed. I'll see what I can find out

Re: SmartStart and Service Pack for Proliant

As mentioned in the above post , RPMs are listed in the (contents) file,

You won't see them within HP SUM "Repository Contents" window, because HP SUM looks for .EXE and .SCEXE when doing the initial repository "collection", The case of the utilities you are mentioning (and some drivers as well) not showing, its because they are RPM files, so you will not see them here, however rpms are pointed in the manifest file, Therefore, when HP SUM detects you are going to install a Linux operating system, will try to check if this RPMs would be compatible for the Linux distro you are going to install to..

Re: SmartStart and Service Pack for Proliant

Goutham_Sabala, your missing the original request from Eric. he's not looking for the online versions of the utlities. Eric is asking now that everything is bundled in the SPP, where can he find the offline bootable versions of ACU and Diags.

I've asked the question to the SPP team and am waiting on a response to pass back to Eric

Re: SmartStart and Service Pack for Proliant

Hi Eric,

While Jim is checking with SPP team, what I understand is , idea of SPP is only driver/utilities + firmware updates, not to also have diagnostic tools.

If the server is Gen7 and before we will have to use

Diagnostics + server configuration + Windows installation = use SmartStart

Driver + software + firmware updates = use SPP

* when ACU version gets updated on HP site, we wil still use the older version of ACU on smart start 8.70 for diagnostic purpose ( as ss dvd will not be updated )

Said this , will wait for Jim to find out with SPP team if they have anything else to say on this.

Re: SmartStart and Service Pack for Proliant

I think I see from this string... SPP isNOT a replacement for the Smartstart, and Smartstart will be continued. Is that correct? I think that's what the last post hinted at.

Re: SmartStart and Service Pack for Proliant

Hi,

Correct SPP is not a replacement for SMartstart, it is a combination of the PSP Proliant Support Pack and the Firmware DVD...

Smartstart will remain existing for all servers up to G7... From Gen8 on, Smartstart will be replaced with an integrated version inside the iLO...

So Smartstart will also go away one day...

Bart

Re: SmartStart and Service Pack for Proliant

Smart Start will not be continued and will be phased out at 8.70b at the current version that is what I have heard. Gen8s will not use smart start and will boot from a inbuilt software called Intelligent provisioning ( f10 ) which is a replacement of smart start. On g6/g7 and previous current version of smart start can be continued to use.

Re: SmartStart and Service Pack for Proliant

OK most reples are suggesting that SmartStart is going away. But so far the next version "Inteligent Provisioning" seems built for installing the OS (future). Smartstart does so much more than that. Off line tools like Diags and ACU, as wells as Clear Config, need to be considered. We have seen the last update for SmartStart, but SPP does not yet include that functionality. Not a question really, but the statement really does raise some questions. I have heard the SPP team is working on it, but have no confirmation. DON'T FORGET ALL OF THE FUNCTIONALITY, WHEN REPLACING SMARTSTART.
