Socket 370 PIII 500 in adaptor card ok instead of Slot 1?

Hi.
I'm new here and I've just acquired a:

Proliant 800 Rackmount 5U, PIII 500Mhz Server.

I was wondering if it would be ok to place a "PPGA 370 Intel Celeron" adaptor card with an "Intel PIII 500Mhz" on it into the slot 1 instead of the standard slot 1 CPU?

Thank you for any input :)

Hi Jon Jon,

You are asking the question to the right place, but the only way someone could answer this is if they had tried this exact scenario themselves.. Honestly, this setup may work, but it may not at the same time. HP will not support this config if you have any issues. My best guess would be to try it and if it works, great.

Sorry I couldn't give you a concrete answer

Re: Socket 370 PIII 500 in adaptor card ok instead of Slot 1?

Thanks!

I suppose the real questions are:

1. What's the difference between a Slot-1 P3 500Mhz CPU and a Socket 370 P3 500Mhz CPU?

2. How does this PGA370 adaptor card work in reference to the CPU I'm using.

If anyone can help with THESE questions, please feel free :D

Even a reference to some documentation would be nice, I've found I'm actually no good at finding docs on the net :S

Thanks guys and gals, appreciate it :D

Re: Socket 370 PIII 500 in adaptor card ok instead of Slot 1?

We HAVE had this experience. We did find that those "adapter" cards do nothing more than adapt the pin outs. And unless the systemboard is adaptable, the CPU will not work in the systemboard. As for the servers, they are highly UN-adaptable and will not accept such a thing. That is, If you plug it in and turn on the box, it will just sit there and not POST.
