System Hang

Windows 2000 Server on ProLiant 7000 with P40 BIOS, 12/27/99. During bootup/login, server hangs hopelessly, sometimes before dialog, sometimes after I have entered my credentials but before the desktop loads. Ocassionally the server actually starts, lets me login and runs for a while but not usually. The server ran NT 4.0 Server fine. We are doing a clean install. Any ideas? Many thanks.
