Tekram 390U3W Controller with Proliant 6400r?

I'm trying to use the four 9gb ultra2 80pin drives in the Proliant 6400r's enclosure with a Tekram 390-U3W controller (LSI 53C1010 chip). It won't detect them. The drives are detected just fine by the onboard SCSI (an Ultra1-Wide LSI 53C876). I've tried both the original SCSI cable and another LVD actively terminated cable. Both cables allow the onboard 53C876 to work fine, albeit at slow ultra1 speeds. Neither will allow the drives to show up, or spin up, attatched to the Tekram 53C1010.
Any ideas? Can I only use proprietary Compaq cotrollers?

I've seen mention on this forum of other Proliants using Tekram controllers, although they did not mention the use of an enclosure.
