The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Scsi\cpqcissm1

Hi

I'm getting the following error on a DL380 G3, with a Ultrium 1 drive plugged into the embedded 5i controller. I have applied the latest firmware to system and support pack. It is causing my backup to fail. Have any ideas on how I can resolve this please?

Hi Julian,

I would suggest you to use a seperate SCSI controller card for Ultrium drive.

That should take care of the issue.

The embedded smart array only has the tape drive plugged into it. There is another controller running the drives.

Would you still recommend using a sepearte card?

I would not agree on using a seperate controller when HP has certified using the Tape Drive on 5i Controller. The below link confirms that.

So it does yes. I had read that myself somewhere but couldnt find the article again.

So why would I be getting these errors then?

I have tried evrything I can possibly think of!

Re: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Scsi\cpqcissm1

You may want to check as to when does the error occurs. Is it while the backup runs or just at the time of booting up or shutting down.

Apart from that the driver/firmware for 5i and the Ultrium drive Firmware should be updated if not done already.

Re: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Scsi\cpqcissm1

Hi Julian,

1. Ensure that the Firmware is also updated on the Ultrium 1 drive.

2. There error message says controller error, try to run the diagnostics on the Ultrium drive or Contact HP Support for TS.

3. If diagnostics clears, than try using a seperate SCSI card and check if everything works fine.

Re: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Scsi\cpqcissm1

It happens just before the backup fails. Have updated drivers and firmware on the whole system, server and tape drive, we have even replaced the tape drive itself.

I'll run the diagnostics on the controller.

Hi, no tape device should be connected to any smart array controller, since SA controller won't be capable of controlling these devices, what you need ot a PCI SCSI controller for the tape device, once this is done, the error will go away.
You heve a question... I have an aswer!!!
