The system does not power-up when I hit the power-on button.

I have an old COMPAQ Proliant 1600 system.
(Pentium III - 500MHz)
The system does not power-up
when I hit the power-on button.
How do fix this problem?
Thank You

Re: The system does not power-up when I hit the power-on button.

Hi Bob,

It is very hard to trobleshoot your system with your info.

you can start checking from following list.
1. when you hit the power-on button does power supply fan start to move?
2. when you hit the power-on button does hard disk spin?
3. when you hit the power-on button does
system light on?
4. when you hit the power-on button does monitor shows BIOS menu and fail to boot?

if you could provide more detailed info, it will be helpful to give you help that you need.

Regards,

Sung

3. when you hit the power-on button does system light on?

4. when you hit the power-on button does

Maybe there is something I need to reset?

Is the powerlead ok.

Re: The system does not power-up when I hit the power-on button.

Odds are the power supply failed.

Typically when a power supply fails there'll be a strong odor - if it stinks by the fan it probably burned out.

If you have another 1600 with a redundant power supply in it you can try taking it from that box and see if the server powers up.

Did something happen just before you had the problem? power surge, etc?

Re: The system does not power-up when I hit the power-on button.

No odor at all.
No power surge and no other problems.
Will the system work when
I remove the sides of the case?
The system has a redundant power supply.
Can I use one off the
redundant power supplies?
Thank You

Re: The system does not power-up when I hit the power-on button.

The system will work with the case off.

there's something else going on if you have two power supplies in that server - It'd be highly unusual for both supplies to fail at the same time.

I have seen individual outlets in power strips fail. Haven't seen outlets in a UPS fail (they can be administratively turned down, depending on the model)

I'd check the actual outlets in which the server is plugged to make sure they have sufficient voltage, then work up from there.

the server can run on a single power supply. you can try taking one out at a time and see if that helps.
