Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

Installing Windows 2000 advance server, smartstart offered max 4080 Mb as boot partition, asking me if I want dynamic format in the future then it siggested to leave 4mb unpartitioned so I allocated 4073Mb for boot, yes agree 6Gig would be great but it would not allow me. Now succesfully loading the W2K ADV server.

Many Thanks !!! Rich

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

Hi John,

all went well thanks to you :)

only hickup is that smart start did not start Array Configuration Utility, in the process before your first tip(which absolutely saved me) I was in a loop gettting into SMART START CD options - UPDATE SYSTEM PARTITION option and I tried to manually run Array Configuration Utility but it was asking me for a diskette, I thought I would make the diskette from the cd which I did but did not work ... manually ,but as you said it should be assisted. I think I will have another go at it next WED all over again and will get the latest smart start CD. If it does not ask me to run the utility again is there a manual way ? this time I will do more research !!! Promise :) Sorry if I sounded like I'm promoting my business, what I meant was a genuine free offer with whatever I can help you with, you really saved the day ! Appreciated

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

Rich:

I am glad I could help you.

The SmartStart Process can be a bit confusing at the beginning because it is really doing a great deal behind the scenes.

I am fairly sure the diskette it is asking you to insert is the SmartStart Profile Diskette. You need this diskette if you choose the "Assisted" path to set up the O/S.
If your SmartStart package does not have the diskette, click here and get one diskette ready:
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/7453.html
You will need this diskette to save the configurations as you go through the process.

If you already have the O/S installed, then you are well beyond the need for SmartStart. Make sure your client keeps that CD with the server in a safe place.

Look above in my previous post; there you will find a link to all the drivers for this server. Should your client ever need to update the software or drivers in the server, which will be where to go. Have them bookmark it for later reference.

I am glad I could keep you in good graces with your client. And payment for the effort has already been made with the points you assigned. (See the sign that says "Will work for points" LOL)

Should you need any more help, please post back. I would be happy to help.

G'luck! -john

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

Hi John,

Thanks, yes I did have the SmartStart Profile Diskette :), what I meant was the concern for not asking me to run ARRAY utility ...so I ended up with a W2K OS installed with no RAID ...and as you mentioned it should have given me the option to set the RAID. I will run the whole thing all over again tomorrow.

The diskette it asked me for was advance array diskette or similar ...when I attempted to run the ARRAY utility manually before (under UPDATE SYS PARTITION ) succeeding with assisted installation.

All the best

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

Hmm... It does not initiate the Array Configuration Utility during the assisted build?
Does the server have a SmartArray Controller installed in it?
By default, the ML370 does not come with one. There is an option to add an Integrated Controller and optional PCI based Array Controllers. If your server does not have one, the ACU will not run. You would then need to build the array with your O/S.

Before you wipe the server again, confirm that it has one installed. Let me know if you need help identifying it.
Enjoy!

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

Yummy! Free beer is the best kind!

When you look in the Windows "Device Manager", you should see the name of the controller listed under SCSI devices. If it says SmartArray XXXX Controller (where XXXX is the model number), you have one, if it says something like Symbios Ligic or Adaptec or 32bit SCSI Controller, then you don't.

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

It is likely you don't have a SmartArray Controller.
Does you client need one for the server?
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/proliantstorage/arraycontrollers/index.html
The 532 or 5304 will work well in this server.
Enjoy!
