URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

Hi there,

TOday I started to clean up ML370 server using smart start, the guide tells me that I will be prompted to SMART START PATH to allow me to chose assisted installation but I am not prompted at all, getting to SYSTEM UTILITIES on smartstart cd offering me :

RUN SYSTEM CONF / UPDATE SYS PARTITION / RUN ERASE (which I ran and seems to detected bits) CREATE SUPPORT SOFTWARE / RUN ROMPAQ

my urgent question is (otherwise I will be sleeping in my client's offices) what is the simplified procedure and what I am missing ...expected assisted installation and I got nothing ... please SAVE ME !!!

MUCH APPRECIATED

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

Rich:

The 100% yes / no answer you need to give is, is there any data you wish to recover from this server or are you wiping it completely out and starting from bare bones?

If you do not need the data, then boot off the Smart Start CD and select the "System Erase Utility". This will completely wipe out the server configurations and data.

Then reboot.

When the server boots up, you will see a few errors stating the system options not set... ignore them (press F1) and boot into SmartStart.

You will now be give the option to choose "Assisted Path".

***

Select the above if, AND ONLY IF, you do not need the data on the server.

If you do need the data on the server, just boot with your install media and perform an O/S upgrade.

Let me know if you need any more help? -john
Enjoy!

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

John , thank you very very much, this bloody manual leaflet does not mention press F1, just started compaq diagnostics ...so will let you know soon how it went. I assume the smartstart will prompt me for ARRAY setup etc. I have 2 identical SCSI 18.9Gig drives. What RAID shall I go for?
If all this works I buy you a drink !!! You saved my day here ! My firt Compaq server format.

Again much appreciated

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

Glad I could help. Yes, the Smart Start CD will begin the Array Configuration Utility after it has built the System Partiton.

Do you have the SmartStart Profile Diskette with your CD?

If not, click here and get one diskette ready:
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/7453.html

You will ned this diskette.

G'luck! - john

be sure to assign points if any of this was helpfull to you.
Enjoy!

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

If you have two drives, best to use RAID 1. Less space, but you get fault tollerance.

RAID 0 is just asking for trouble unless your application requires it.
Enjoy!

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

If you mean size, I would make the O/S reside in 6GB or so... the rest for data.

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

Installing Windows 2000 advance server, smartstart offered max 4080 Mb as boot partition, asking me if I want dynamic format in the future then it siggested to leave 4mb unpartitioned so I allocated 4073Mb for boot, yes agree 6Gig would be great but it would not allow me. Now succesfully loading the W2K ADV server.

Many Thanks !!! Rich

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

Hi John,

all went well thanks to you :)

only hickup is that smart start did not start Array Configuration Utility, in the process before your first tip(which absolutely saved me) I was in a loop gettting into SMART START CD options - UPDATE SYSTEM PARTITION option and I tried to manually run Array Configuration Utility but it was asking me for a diskette, I thought I would make the diskette from the cd which I did but did not work ... manually ,but as you said it should be assisted. I think I will have another go at it next WED all over again and will get the latest smart start CD. If it does not ask me to run the utility again is there a manual way ? this time I will do more research !!! Promise :) Sorry if I sounded like I'm promoting my business, what I meant was a genuine free offer with whatever I can help you with, you really saved the day ! Appreciated

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

Rich:

I am glad I could help you.

The SmartStart Process can be a bit confusing at the beginning because it is really doing a great deal behind the scenes.

I am fairly sure the diskette it is asking you to insert is the SmartStart Profile Diskette. You need this diskette if you choose the "Assisted" path to set up the O/S.
If your SmartStart package does not have the diskette, click here and get one diskette ready:
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/7453.html
You will need this diskette to save the configurations as you go through the process.

If you already have the O/S installed, then you are well beyond the need for SmartStart. Make sure your client keeps that CD with the server in a safe place.

Look above in my previous post; there you will find a link to all the drivers for this server. Should your client ever need to update the software or drivers in the server, which will be where to go. Have them bookmark it for later reference.

I am glad I could keep you in good graces with your client. And payment for the effort has already been made with the points you assigned. (See the sign that says "Will work for points" LOL)

Should you need any more help, please post back. I would be happy to help.

G'luck! -john

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

Hi John,

Thanks, yes I did have the SmartStart Profile Diskette :), what I meant was the concern for not asking me to run ARRAY utility ...so I ended up with a W2K OS installed with no RAID ...and as you mentioned it should have given me the option to set the RAID. I will run the whole thing all over again tomorrow.

The diskette it asked me for was advance array diskette or similar ...when I attempted to run the ARRAY utility manually before (under UPDATE SYS PARTITION ) succeeding with assisted installation.

All the best

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

Hmm... It does not initiate the Array Configuration Utility during the assisted build?
Does the server have a SmartArray Controller installed in it?
By default, the ML370 does not come with one. There is an option to add an Integrated Controller and optional PCI based Array Controllers. If your server does not have one, the ACU will not run. You would then need to build the array with your O/S.

Before you wipe the server again, confirm that it has one installed. Let me know if you need help identifying it.
Enjoy!

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

Yummy! Free beer is the best kind!

When you look in the Windows "Device Manager", you should see the name of the controller listed under SCSI devices. If it says SmartArray XXXX Controller (where XXXX is the model number), you have one, if it says something like Symbios Ligic or Adaptec or 32bit SCSI Controller, then you don't.

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

It is likely you don't have a SmartArray Controller.
Does you client need one for the server?
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/proliantstorage/arraycontrollers/index.html
The 532 or 5304 will work well in this server.
Enjoy!

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

Hi John,

I will check soon, still at my office :), downloading the latest SMART START ver 7.0, do you reckon it would be just easier to do it in Windows ? With the compaq array utility ? I guess if I have the controller I gotta do it the hard way :(

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

Hi John,

You were right, I have Compaq 32-Bit SCSI 3 Controller /P as two devices ...
so now I will need to do the software RAID ...any tips on that one ...at the moment I have a disk one converted into Dynamic and Disk two unpartitioned and unformated.

Re: URGENT :( SMARTSTART PORBLEMS

Software RAID1 is easy enough to follow:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;302969&Product=win2000

1. Disk 1 must be unallocated space before you can proceed with mirroring.
2. Right-click disk 0, which contains the boot and system files, and then click Add Mirror.
3. A dialog box opens in which any disk on your system that is available for mirroring will be displayed. Under Select a disk to use as the mirrored space for Boot and System, select the disk of your choice (in this example, it is Disk 1), and then click Add Mirror.

4. Both Disk 0 and Disk 1 will now have the same color code, the same drive letter, and the volumes will have the status note "Regenerating" displayed while the information is being copied from the first disk to the second disk. The volume of the new mirror will automatically be sized by the system to the same size as that of the original boot and system volume.
5. After you receive the following message, click OK to acknowledge it:
*****
DISK MANAGEMENT
You have mirrored your boot volume. To be able to boot from the mirrored disk, add the appropriate entry to the boot.ini file.
*****

So, if you want to boot from the new mirrored disk, you have to change the Boot.ini ARC path that points the computer to the partition in which the system files are located.

There are some "References" at the bottom of the link I posted which are good reading material to become familiar with.

Let me know if you need more help?
