Hello! Anyone who has successfully installed any USB 3.0 controller on this server?

Re: USB 3.0 on ML350p Gen8

Hello,

ML350p gen8 is USB 2.0 complaint.  Please refer the quickspec for the same:

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/14226_div/14226_div.html

However USB 3.0 has transmission speeds of up to 5 Gbit/s, which is 10 times faster than USB 2.0 (480 Mbit/s). USB 3.0 significantly reduces the time required for data transmission, reduces power consumption[citation needed <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed> ], and is backwards compatible with USB 2.0.

Re: USB 3.0 on ML350p Gen8

Hi,

we have tested HP QT587AA on

ML350G6     with SBS2008, using TI-Driver 1.12.24.0

ML350p G8  with Server 2012, but don´t remember the driver version (think it was the os build in driver)

works quite good with some restrictions.

1. ML350G6 sometimes the server hangs on reboot with USB-HDD attached.

2. SBS 2008 bare metal restore is not working on USB3 ports until you load the driver for this card, but you can use USB2 ports for restore as well.

3. You maybe need a sata power extension cable.

4. Don´t use the HP Driver => use offical TI driver from: http://www.ti.com/product/TUSB7340

Regards

Andreas

Sorry to revive an old thread...

I wanted to ask Senator if the fan speed increased in the 350p Gen 8 server after QT587AA was installed?

We had a Startech USB 3.0 card, it uses the same TI 7340 chipset as the QT587AA but the fan speed increases a noticeable amount, removing the card reduces the fan speed. Did you experience the same with the HP card?

Oh, I just have the same problem!

I've installed the original HP USB3.0 Controller QT587AA with the same TI7340 chipset - just today!

By the way, it was difficult to find free sata power connector and then to put extention cable correctly in order not to prevent correct installation of plastic ventilation casing on its place before closing side cover of computer case.

And after start and boot the whole system WS2012 the server is making a noise that was not before!!!

Re: USB 3.0 on ML350p Gen8

Yeah, you are using a desktop pci card in a server. Adding non-supported cards in servers are known to make the fan speed increase.
And as you said, when you remove the card the noise is gone.

As far as I know there is no supported USB 3.0 controller available for these servers (might want to check this with HP Pre-sales).
So as a work around I would try different pci slots and check if that makes a difference. Also if you don't have the max amount of fans installed (if your server only has 1 processor) I would try that.
However keep in mind that this will remain a non-supported configuration.
Did my post help? Thank me with kudo's! :)
