Unable to load OS on Proliant 1600
Hello,
I have a Proliant 1600 (PII 400) and the Smartstart CD 5.50 but I can't figure out how to install windows 2000 on it.. I don't see any options for this.

Re: Unable to load OS on Proliant 1600
Hi Henk,
The normal procedure is to wipe the configuration using the System Erase utility and then Smartstart will be able to perform a fresh install.
If Smartstart detects an existing disk configuration and operating system it bypasses the install process and only takes you to the utility screens to run ACU, System Config, ADU etc.
Providing you don't have any valued data on your disks you can run a system erase from the Smartstart CD or floppy disk and everything will work from there on. Take a backup of anything you do need because the system erase wipes the raid configuration details too from any Smart Array controller. You have been warned....
Smartstart will then take you through each step of the O/S install.
If you need the System Erase Utility diskette you can get it from here.

Be aware that you will need the Smartstart Server Profile Diskette to save the answers you provide during an "Assisted" install of the operating system. The Server Profile Diskette can be downloaded from here.

Smartstart 5.50 was the last version to support the G1 systems like the Proliant 1600 so that, or 5.40 are the best ones to use. If you need any BIOS or drivers for the Proliant 1600 look here.

I hope this helps.

Re: Unable to load OS on Proliant 1600
Hi Brian,
Thanks for the reply.
The problem is that there is no option to install an OS when I boot the server with the smartstart CD (5.50)
Also there is no RAID card in the server maybe that is the problem..??
I know that the server works as I have just whiped the drives.
When I build the server about a year and a half ago I had to use 2 disk to install the OS I can remember but I can't find the disks anymore and I can't remember what was on the disks...
Thanks for the reply.

Re: Unable to load OS on Proliant 1600
Hi Henk,
As has been said before the smart start cd could be detecting a previous o.s install and will only go into utilitymode (automatically).
If you are not fermilure with the procedure of undoing this you can acctually setup your windows 2000 installation cd without the smartstart cd, you may have to download some drivers afterwards. (I think windows 2000 would cover 99% of the drivers in the proliant 1xxx series).
However if you want to use the smartstart cd which is always reccomended but not always nessassary please let us know and i can post up the hp install guide for Proliant Series Servers.
Many Thanks,
