Upgrade Proliant 5500

Hi!
I bought a older used Proliant 5500 Pentium 2 based server lately (rack version). I wanted to upgrade the system from 2 to 4 cpus when the idea of mounting faster cpus came to me. But which ones do fit in? Only P2 or also P3? Is there anywhere a serial number on the case which I can somehow clear this issue?

Re: Upgrade Proliant 5500

Hi,
You cannot mix P2 and P3 CPU, furthermore you need to use CPU with same speed

"Q: Does the Compaq ProLiant 5500 support mixed processor speeds and cache sizes?
A: Compaq ProLiant 5500 6/500 models support mixing processors of different cache sizes but does not support processor frequency mixing"
See P2 CPU product numbers here:

Make sure you have updated server firmware before CPU add.

Re: Upgrade Proliant 5500

Thanks for your reply.
So if I'd update the firmware and remove all old processors I'd be able to add f.ex. PIII 500Mhz CPU's all of the same type? Did I get this right? Or just the PII 450Mhz like the option was then back when introduced?
Sorry if I am a bit confused, I didn't work with such machines before..
