Upgrade from raid 1 to raid 5

I have a Proliant ML310 G4 server with 2 x 160gb sata hard drives, set up on a raid 1. Is it possible to add another 160gb drive and change to a raid 5 configuration? If so, will i have to re-install the OS?

If your using the embedded SATA RAID controller, it only supports RAID 0 and RAID 1

Hi Steven,

There are no issues in adding a drive and changing it to RAID5. Just check whether the controller supports it.

Re: Upgrade from raid 1 to raid 5

thank you for your promt response. The ML310 G4 server currently has a 'HP 8 Internal Port SAS HBA' raid controller and from what i can tell only supports raid 0 and 1 (please correct me if i'm wrong). the drives are Sata. I am considering installing an E200 raid controller which supports raid 0 and 1 out of the box, and with a 128mb BBU Cache can be configured for raid 5. Is this controller complatible with the ML310 as the spec for the E200 controller only lists the ML350? Also if you have another way around it, please let me know, thanks in advance.

Re: Upgrade from raid 1 to raid 5

'HP 8 Internal Port SAS HBA' raid controller does not support Raid 5, check the quickspecs from the link below
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12332_na/12332_na.html#Technical%20Specifications
To check the other supported controller supporting Raid 5 check the server specs for Option Parts - Storage Controller and then check the quickspecs for the controller to see if it supports Raid 5

Hope this info helps !
