Upgrading the array to bigger drives

My question is about upgrading the array that already exists in this server that consists of (3) 9.1 gig hard drives and I would like to put in 18 Gig hard drives. My question is: Would it be possible to pull one drive at a time and replace it with an 18 Gig and let the array rebuild itself and move on to the next drive until all three are replaced? I think I've read of something like this being done successfully before, but I'm not sure where it was or what machine it was. If anyone can give me good SOLID information about this and whether or not it will work, I would greatly appreciate it, and the customer would also.

Re: Upgrading the array to bigger drives

Hi Mike, the server is running raid 5 with 3 drive right, I don think so u can do it, because you are replacing the current drive to another type of drive(different capacity). And raid will NOT allow u do to that, you must reinstall OS and reconfigure the server again.

Another option is add in the 18GB drive to a new array instead of existing array.
I hope this info will help you.
