Is it save to put used harddrives in a Proliant 1600 with SA 3200 controller.
Now I have 3 disk in it but i want to upgrade to 6 disk.

Re: Used hardrives

Used as in used "Compaq Universal SCSI Disks" you gathered from another ProLiant system?

If yes, then yes you can. When you generate the new array or expand the existing one, then you will be effectively wiping the data out that may have existed on them. If your intent is to preserve the data, then make sure the drives you move arrive in the order you gathered them from the other server. Once they spin up, the 3200 controller will detect the existing array and initialize it.

Does this answer your question? Or are you trying to use a third party disk?
Enjoy!

Re: Used hardrives

I have found that if the Firmware level on the 3200 controller is too low you must put the drives in a particular order, but if you upgrade to the latest firmware it will recognise them whichever order you put them in.

I think you need to provide a little more info as Joost suggests. It depends what you are trying to do.

Re: Used hardrives

Well I want to expand the arry to max 6 drives. If there is any data on the used Compaq SCSI disk, that I am not interested in, what i then the latest firmware I need on the SA 3200 controller.

Is there also an max in Gb for the SCSI disk or is it possible to place 3 x 9.1 SCSI disk and 3 x for example 15 Gb??

Re: Used hardrives

Here is a link to the firmware...

You can update the firmware either through Windows:
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/support/files/storage/us/download/14979.html

Or, from a diskette at boot time:
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/support/files/storage/us/download/14694.html
If you use the diskette version (recommended) you will need Diskette #1

The SmartArray 3200 bios has support for up to 36GB drives.
Enjoy!
