Using a tape drive on internal SCSI port

I tried to use a 12/24 internal tape drive an a Proliant ML370 with Integrated Smart Array controller.
OS: Linux Kernel v. 2.4.2
on startup the tape drive is detected by the bios but not useable under linux.
any help welcome
