SUCCESS!  HP Likes to make things tricky though, the controller driver didn't even show up on HP's drivers page for my server under 2012, I had to go to the drivers page for the controller specifically to find it (which made me a little nervous then that it wasn't going to be compatible and would cause unexpected problems).

But it worked and now I have everything the way I expected it to be from the start.  Thank you again for all your help, I hope you are able to solve your issues as well!
