VmWare ESX 3i

Hello!

When and if will HP Systems Insight manager support latest version of ESX server (3i)?

So that agents will notify me via email that 1 disk in array has failed or some other hardware failed...

I cannot configure it now, because there are no compatible agents for 3i...

Thanks for help!

Re: VmWare ESX 3i

Hi,

there seem to be no agents for the ESX 3i, in the future too maybe...

Check :

http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/vmware/ESX3i.html

"VMware ESX Server 3i for ProLiant includes HP System Insight Manager providers..."

"VMware is able to deliver state-of-the-industry systems management without the additional overhead and footprint of an additional, complete operating environment to host the management agents..."

There are some kind of SIM providers(instead of agents) that will scan the hardware for troubles :)

Re: VmWare ESX 3i

Thanks!

So with what and how can I monitor hardware?

Right now I`m evaluating ESX 3i on Proliant DL380 G5 and the only way I can see that something is wrong is if I stand next to server and see amber light or if I manually check Ilo2 IML logs...

Thats not good at all...

Re: VmWare ESX 3i

well, I'm not very deep in the material, but according :

http://www.vmware.com/company/news/releases/hp_vmworld.html

&

http://virtualization.sys-con.com/read/507478.htm

"HP Systems Insight Manager 5.2 software incorporates user-friendly features and an improved installation process, and it supports association and discovery for VMware ESX 3i. Enhanced hardware alerting and inventory management allows customers to actively receive information about the health of their ProLiant servers"

The SIM providers are integrated in 3i, so SIM 5.2 must be able to discover the server and you should be able to manage it like other ones...Actually , you are little early with the testing and pre-evaluation, because there is no documentation available so far. Not sure

Did you try to discover the server with HP SIM 5.2(the first version that supports 3i?!)...

Re: VmWare ESX 3i

Yes, I tried to discover it but no luck...

It shows as "Unmanaged"...

Probably we will have to buy USB stick with VmWare ESX 3i which HAS support for SIM 5.2

I suppose regular version available on vmware download site does NOT have theese "agents" included...

Re: VmWare ESX 3i

Did you guys ever get this figured out?
I just installed 3i on a DL380 G5 also and am running HP SIM 5.2 Update 1 and it is showing up as unmanaged also.

Re: VmWare ESX 3i

Choose Options -> Protocol Settings -> Global Protocol settings -> Enter 3i root username and password to Default WBEM settings.

After that rerun system identification.

Perfect! That did it!
Still can't monitor disk however...

Re: VmWare ESX 3i

We have just purchased and installed the
"HP integrated VMware ESX Server 3i" USB key and we cannot get our HP SIM 5.2 SP2 to see the it for what it is!

We have reran "Identify System" and all we get is the following:
Starting identification process...
Checking for known running web servers.
Checking for System Management Home Page and other HP web agents.
The System Management Homepage is not supported on this system.
Checking for WBEM support on system.
Running WBEM rules based identification.
Cannot get ComputerSystem WBEM/WMI data from the system
Running VM Identification
The system is not a VMware ESX Host, or WBEM credentials may not be specified, skipping VM Identification
Running WS-Man identification.
The system did not respond to WS-Management, verify credentials.
Checking for SNMP support on system.
The system did not respond to SNMP, verify security settings and community strings.
Running SNMP base Cluster identification using common cluster MIB.
This was not a system with the common cluster MIBs supported.
Running HP ProLiant management agent identification
The system does not support SNMP.
Running HP NetServer identification.

Running Generic DMI identification.
The system does not have Generic DMI support.
Checking for SSH protocol support.
The SSH protocol is not supported on this system
Running Storage identification.
Did not detect WBEM support on this system. Will not attempt storage identification. If this is a storage host, check WBEM credentials and make sure the providers and CIMOM are operational on the host.
Storage identification completed.
Running HP Service Guard Identification.
The system is not part of HP Service Guard cluster
Checking if this system is supported by Insight Power Manager.
Insight Power Manager is not supported.

What are we missing? Should there be a Systems Management homepage under the IP:2381 because we cannot see anything?!?!

Re: VmWare ESX 3i

Hi,

This cant be true.... is it?

There seems to be no remote tool available to monitor storage controller and connected disks on a DL380G5 or an DL360G5 server running ESX3i.

Everything is monitored: Processors powersupplies, fans, environment. And all these items can be monitored by iLo2, ESX3i and SIM52.

But not the HP P400 array controller!

We are using DL380 and DL360 servers and tested ESX3i embedded and installable versions, HP and vmware versions, including esx3i u3.

We enabled snmp within ESX3i, applied u2 hotfix to SIM52SP2, configured traps to be sent from ESX3i to SIM and enabled WBEM Event subscriptions in SIM for ESX host.

But still no storage controller status within SIM (nor in ESX).

These machines are going to be placed in a remote data center. How are we going to monitor diskstatus? (drive by is not a serious workaronud....)

Anyone any suggestion?

Is it possible to somehow sent controller errors/events from the controller directly to HP integrated management log? Which can be retreived bij iLo.

On the internet there are several images showing diskcontroller status within Vmware-VI. It is not always clear if the images are taken froma a ESX3i host or an ESX3 host.

Is it even possible to get controller status from a ESX3i host? For example running ESX3i on a non hp server or a other controller?
