What is PCI riser cage - 408788-001

In order to add more PCI slots to my server I was told to order part # 410570-B21, but What I received is just a card part #408788-001
see the picture here http://quickfiles.net/img/408788-001.JPG

I need to know if I can fix this to the server or I also need a cage similar to this http://www.cmserversdirect.com/popup_image.php?pID=14847

Or the cage is already coming with the server?

The riser cage will be with the server. You need to remove the card (it takes a star bit) to remove 3 screws then you slide the new one where you take the old one out.

It's pretty simple and takes about 5 minutes.

Hi Graeme Bray,

I don't have a cage, I got only a card http://quickfiles.net/img/408788-001.JPG My question is should I buy a cage or the cage comes with the server?

The server will come with a PCIe card installed in the riser cage. You will take the cover off of the server and remove the two hand screws to lift the cage out of the server then you swap the card and re-install in the server.

Hi

Usually a riser is for change PCI slots PCI-e for PCI-Express, etc..
not add slots, only change type.

you open your server, and change new riser for the installed riser

Re: What is PCI riser cage - 408788-001

Look at the quick spec:

HP ProLiant DL385 Generation 5
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/13012_div/13012_div.HTML

The server has 5 PCI-E slots as standard (2 on system board and 3 on riser installed in cage).
Products numbers 410570-B21 and 408788-001 indicate the same part - mixed riser (PCI-E/PCI-X). Installing this riser requires removing standard 3-slot PCI-E riser. After installing you will have still 5 slots, but two of them will be PCI-X.

Depending on the server, the riser cage could be PCI-X/PCIe or all PCIe. Custom built from HP, come as you order. If you bought off the shelf from a vendor you might need to order the other riser cage.

The model 459800-421 is off the shelf server, so it has standard 5 PCI-E slots.
