Which way is best Array Configuration
Hi all,
I heated discussion was had yesterday and we have 2 techie with opposing ideas on the way forward for DL385 G8 Array configurations. Lets have a generic server with 6 physical HDs.
Method 1
Is to create 1 array with 2 physical disk and make a logical drive raid 1 with that.
Then create array2 using the other 4 physical disk and then make a logical drive raid 5 with that.
.
Method 2
To create 1 array wth 6 physical drives. Then make a logical drive raid 1, then a second logical drive raid 5.
.
What is the recommended route these days?
If a physical drive fails with Method 2 wil all logical drives be affected?
TIA

Re: Which way is best Array Configuration
Hello,
I am always a big fan of the simplest approach. What is your goal in creating arrays? Is your primary concern data security or performance?

Re: Which way is best Array Configuration
I prefer to keep OS and data separated, I would go for method 1.
In (2) a drive fail will affect all logical drives on it.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Which way is best Array Configuration
Logical drive 1 will be the operating system. Logical drive 2 will be the application software. This is more of a general query so please state your reason for either method.
