Wrong slot for P400 in DL380G5 and DL585G2?

Hello everyone,
We have a DL380G5 with P400 controller card. Recently we found P400 is installed on slot 1, which only support PCIe x4 only (according to DL380G5 manual). But according to the manual of P400, it should be installed on PCIe x8 or higher. This installation was done by HP, we haven't changed anything after we bought it.
Also on another server DL585G2, the P400 is installed on slot 9, which also support PCIe x 4 only.
Does it mean the default installation by HP is improper? Is there any one noticed the same problem?

It is possible, perhaps even common, to have a slot which is x4 electrically be x8 physically. The PCIe spec allows for that, and the x8 (electrically) card will "step-down" to x4 for its transfers across the PCIe bus.

so the P400 (PCIe x8) card should be installed on slot PCIe x8 to get better performance, which it should be. That means we need to re-locate the card after we brought it from HP. Wondering why HP installed the server in this way?

Re: Wrong slot for P400 in DL380G5 and DL585G2?

HI,

p400 x8 connector width and x8 bus width . if installed in x4 BUS width performance will decrease to half, In dl380 G5 if using embedded slots you don't have another choice than x4, if PCI-e riser cage is installed use Slot 4 and 5 (bus width x8 connector width x16), if PCI-e/PCI-x riser cage installed use slot 3 (bus width x8 connector width x16)
for the dl585 g2 use slots 5, 7 or 8 (bus width x8 connector width x16)
and yes, the HP installation people can miss this configuration, it happens
hope this will be useful, check quickspecs as reference if needed

Re: Wrong slot for P400 in DL380G5 and DL585G2?

we have installed the PCI-e cage riser cage. What I am concerning is that the p400 might be the low profile plug-in card, as the height of slot 1 seems much shorter than the slots in riser cage. If it is the case, the only way to do it is to get the bracket of P400 changed to standard profile bracket. Maybe HP can offer such small thing?

Re: Wrong slot for P400 in DL380G5 and DL585G2?

Before you start trying to move the p400 card, just how many discs are you looking to drive with the thing and at what performance level? Unless that exceeds the bandwidth made available in a PCIe x4 slot it likely isn't worth the worry.

While I'm not in the ProLiant organization, I can say that for every DL3XX I've seen, the p400 used for the internal mechs has been in one of the low profile slots on the motherboard. Same for the rx2660 servers.

Re: Wrong slot for P400 in DL380G5 and DL585G2?

hi

I just wanted to add if you check both servers specs

Slot 1 for Dl380 G5 - is reserved for p400

as well as Dl585 G2 slot 9 is reserve for the storage controller

Dl380 G5

dl585 g2

so that is factory defaults if you want to move controller test and let us know

Re: Wrong slot for P400 in DL380G5 and DL585G2?

Ran into the same thing. Installed the P400 into the riser cage. But now I have no place to put the BBWC. The power cord won't reach to the riser cage from where the BBWC is supposed to go. Any ideas?

Re: Wrong slot for P400 in DL380G5 and DL585G2?

jclark772,

You need the 24 inch battery attach kit to allow the P400 to attach to the battery.

Sales part number is 417836-B21.

It's needed in the DL380G5 if you have a P400 in a full size slot. (See quickspec).

Re: Wrong slot for P400 in DL380G5 and DL585G2?

Hello,

don't hurt me of you have another opinion, but in my mind a P400 controller in the onboard PCI-e 4x Slot is not really a problem. PCI-e 4x provide a Bandwidth of 2 GB/s or 16 Gbit/s. You can put up to 16 drives in a DL580 G5, and each drive got it's own channel with 3 Gbit/s. That is much more, then the drive can deliver. I don't think that this is a real bottleneck. It's more a marketing argument, like the "bad" 2 Gbit/s fc-drives in an EVAx100, if you're own product has 4 Gbit/s fc-drives.

Re: Wrong slot for P400 in DL380G5 and DL585G2?

I have just the opposite problem. My P400
came installed in the riser and I want it
in the embedded slot (where the documentation
said it would go!). I tried moving it, the
cables reach, but the SAS data cable connectors
on the P400 end are so big that they prevent
me from putting the lid back on. Anyone
know of a solution? I've not gotten any
useful response from my HP contact.
