adding a second processor to dl380 g3

I am trying to add a second processor to our unit and after installing the ppm and cpu, I get a blank screen. I can here the disk spinning up, but no boot text to the screen. If I take the second cpu and ppm out the text appears.

Eric:

Is this a brand new Processor Upgrade Kit?

Check for bent processor pins.

Try to reseat the processor. They can be tricky to get seated well.

Check for the Interlock LED's behind the proceesors themselves. Are any amber?

If you leave the PPM in and the processor out, you should get POST and an Error stating the processor did not init. If you do not, you may have a bad PPM.
Enjoy!

We moved the NEW processor over to slot1 and the same outcome (no post). HP is sending us a new processor and ppm overnight. Hopefully that will solve the issue.

Thanks

Re: adding a second processor to dl380 g3

The installation of a second CPU to a DL380G3 can be quite hairy...

A couple of hints for when you get the replacement.

Check for bent pins before you try and install it - I've had new cpus that have come with bent pins.

When installing the heat sink, you have to put quite a bit of pressure on to get it to clip on to the cpu. Never be tempted to remove the heatsink to check whether everythings together properly though. You'll have a nightmare trying to get the CPU back into the socket again once its stuck itself to the heatsink !

Cheers,
Rob
