arranging smart array cards on proliant 7000

I have a proliant 7000 with two 3100ES cards, one which is redundant. I also have a proliant 6500 with a smart 3200. Can I use the 3200 in the proliant 7000 ? And also can I make the redundant a non redundant, ie use all three smart array cards (better performance) ?

Re: arranging smart array cards on proliant 7000

Yes, it would be possible to install a 3200 controller in a 7000. It is however not possible and makes no sense to use both ES3150 controllers without redundancy. The ES3150 is a 3 channel controller which uses internal cabling towards the diskshelves, so every shelve has its own channel on the controller. performance shouldn't be an issue.

Re: arranging smart array cards on proliant 7000

thx, just wondered if the 3100ES cards are the same as 3150 that you mention ?

Also do you know about the channel config for the 3200, i think that the 3200 is better but depends on how many channels this has ?

would it be better to put 3200 on one channel and 3100 on the rest ?

Would be grateful if you could advise the best way, thx

Re: arranging smart array cards on proliant 7000

Sorry, typo.. I meant ES3100 controller. The specs for the ES3100 and 3200 are almost the same. As already meantioned, i would not change anything.3 shelves connected to 3 channels is perfect.

Re: arranging smart array cards on proliant 7000

thx again, but for some reason we only have two channels of the controller (3100ES). Another system with the 3200 is very much faster, hence thats why I was thinking of utilising it, I guess I can leave it mixed up (ie 3100ES as redundant and 3200 as live ) ?

Thx

Re: arranging smart array cards on proliant 7000

There should go a cable from each driveshelf to the system i/o board and connected to port 1,2,3 connectors (3 channels.

Maybe you can give me an overview of your storage (how many drives and in which shelves).

I can not say anything out of experience, but according to the specs of the controllers 3200,3100 there should not be much difference in performance between them.

note to make your 3100es redundant then both roms on the board need to be at the same revison.
