can't upgrade memory

Proliant 1600 PII 400Mhz 196Mb RAM running NT4.

On two separate occasions we have tried to install an additional 128Mb RAM into our server. On each occasion the bootup recognises the increased RAM but the server cannot be logged into the network and can't be seen on the Tree. On both occasions when the chip was removed the system booted up as it should.

Can you please advise what the problem is and how to fix it.

Re: can't upgrade memory

I ran this by a couple of technicians and all we can think of is that it is incorrect memory
The proper option part # for this server is 313615-B21 for a 128 meg 100 mhz SDRAM DIMM. The spare part # is 317756-001 and the assembly # (you may find this # on the DIMM) is 306431-001
