cpu downgrade?

I have recently bought 3 DL360 G3's each with single 3.06GHZ XEON Processors. I was wondering whether it was possible to change the cpu to maybe a 1.8GHZ. Or is it possible to underclock the current cpu to anything below 2.0GHZ?

I have to ask: WHY?

Re: cpu downgrade?

I'd also have to ask why - and I'm sure there is a good reason...

The lowest 'supported' proc speed is a 2.4GHz. I also think there is a difference in bus speed between the G3 and G2.

Re: cpu downgrade?

Hmmmm You must be interested in some Dl360 G1's. I might know someone with a few they are looking to get rid of.

Maybe we can trade?

I think it's impossible.

Looks like you get 10 points for just asking "Why?" so I thought I would try my luck as well!!

Incidently, I don't think it is possible either.

Re: cpu downgrade?

I think that all the current P4s can be clocked down to 2.4GHz (this is done automatically when the system is idle to save energy).

Of course, if the CPUs support Hyperthreading, you could turn it on, and each virtual CPU would be 1.53GHz. if you're running windows, it's simple to set affinity to only one of the CPUs, if you are looking to test requirements and so forth.

Re: cpu downgrade?

I forgot to mention that we need it to run Windows NT4. The restriction on the speed of the cpu is due to the old app we use.

Re: cpu downgrade?

Doh, there goes my trade..

That is soo funny cause I was just thinking that there was some software from HP that might be able to do that. I remember playing with it a bit, but unsure if it allowed you to "underclock". I think it only allows you to give a percentage of time of the CPU to an app.

RPM was the Acronym... Resource Partitiong Manager?
